How to Book Car Rental in Bhutan 2026 | 6 Steps + Template
There's no Uber, Ola or app-based car rental in Bhutan. You book a car with driver directly with a local operator, usually on WhatsApp or by phone, 2–4 weeks before you travel. The whole process takes about six steps:
- Fix your dates, group size and route
- Send an enquiry to one or two operators
- Compare the quotes line by line
- Confirm and pay the advance
- Share your documents for permits
- Get your driver's details a few days before arrival

Booking a car in Bhutan feels unfamiliar the first time. There's no website where you pick a car and pay with a card. Instead, you message a real person, get a quote and confirm on WhatsApp.
Done right, it's actually easier than an app: one conversation, one fixed price, and a driver who knows exactly where you're going. This guide shows you how to do it right, with a timeline, a message template you can copy, and a worksheet for comparing quotes.
When to Book: The Timeline
How early you need to book depends mostly on the season and the vehicle.

Last minute? In the off-season, a car can often be arranged in 24–48 hours. In October, don't count on it.
The 6 Steps in Detail
Step 1: Fix the three basics
Before you message anyone, know your dates, group size (adults, children and ages) and starting point (Bagdogra, NJP, Jaigaon or Paro). A rough list of places is enough. Your operator will help shape the route.
Step 2: Send an enquiry
Message one or two operators on WhatsApp with the template below. A good operator replies the same day with questions or a quote. If you're unsure which car you need, our guide to the best car for a Bhutan trip helps.
Step 3: Compare quotes properly
Don't compare totals; compare what's inside them. Use the worksheet further down. A cheaper quote often leaves out GST, the driver's stay or the return leg.
Step 4: Confirm in writing and pay the advance
Ask for a written confirmation listing the vehicle model, dates, route, total price and inclusions. Then pay the advance. A screenshot of the WhatsApp confirmation is fine, but it must list everything.

Step 5: Share your documents
Send copies of each traveller's passport or Voter ID, plus birth certificates for children without passports. International travellers' operators also need visa details. Your operator uses these for route permits. Our Bhutan car rental permit guide lists what you need.
Step 6: Get your driver's details
A few days before arrival, you should receive your driver's name, phone number, the car's registration and the exact pickup time and place. Save the number and send a hello on WhatsApp so they recognise you at the pickup point.
How to Compare Two Quotes
Here's a real-world style example for the same 6-day trip. At first glance, Quote B looks ₹2,000 cheaper.

The lesson: Quote B is actually about ₹2,000 more expensive once you add what it left out, and the car isn't even confirmed. Always fill in every row before deciding.

Payment, Advance and Cancellation: What's Normal
Policies vary by operator, so always get them in writing. These are the common patterns:
Topic
What's typical
What to watch for
Advance
A part payment to confirm the vehicle, often 20–30%
Requests for 100% upfront months ahead
Balance
Paid at the start or end of the trip
Unclear timing; agree it in writing
Payment methods
Bank transfer, UPI for Indian travellers, cash in INR or Ngultrum
Cash-only with no receipt
Receipts
A written or WhatsApp receipt for every payment
No proof of the advance
Cancellation
Advance refundable or adjustable if you cancel well ahead; partly kept close to the date
No policy at all
Weather changes
Flexible dates or adjusted routes if roads close
Charges for changes caused by landslides or closures
Our tip: For a multi-day trip, ask whether the advance can be moved to new dates if your plans change. Many operators would rather reschedule than refund.
Where to Book: 4 Channels Compared

Watch out for

Direct with a local operator
The best price and direct contact with the team that runs the car; easy changes
Check reviews and ask for written confirmation
Through your hotel
Short local transfers and day trips
Usually priced higher; limited vehicle choice

One booking for hotels, car and permits
Agent margins; the car may be subcontracted, so ask who actually runs it

Off-season flexibility

Limited choice, haggling, and no guarantee in peak season

For international travellers: Your car usually comes as part of a package from a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, with your visa, SDF and guide. You can still ask for a specific vehicle.

For Indian travellers: Booking direct is easy. One operator with offices on both sides of the border can cover the Indian taxi to Jaigaon and the Bhutanese car from Phuentsholing. See our full guide to Bhutan car rental for Indians.
Red Flags to Avoid
Most operators are honest, but a few warning signs are worth knowing:
- A price far below everyone else's. It usually means GST, the driver's stay or the return leg has been left out, and you'll pay it on day 3.
- No written confirmation. If they won't put the vehicle, dates and total in writing, walk away.
- "We'll decide the car on arrival." In peak season, that often means a smaller car than you paid for.
- An Indian taxi offering to "cover all of Bhutan". It still owes ₹4,500 a day in Green Tax and needs permits; check who pays.
- Pressure to pay the full amount immediately by personal account transfer, with no receipt.
- No local presence. Ask where their Bhutan office or base is. A team on the ground solves problems faster when a road closes or a car breaks down.
- Vague answers about permits. A good operator can tell you exactly which permits your route needs.
