Bhutan Car Rental for Indians 2026

Bhutan Car Rental for Indians 2026 | Cost in ₹, Routes & Tips

Indians don't need a visa for Bhutan, can pay in rupees, and get the cheapest SDF of any nationality: ₹1,200 per adult per night. For the car, the smartest plan is to reach Jaigaon by train, flight or taxi, then switch to a Bhutan-registered car with a local driver at Phuentsholing.

  • Car with driver: about ₹2,500–₹3,500/day for a sedan and ₹3,500–₹4,500/day for a Creta-type SUV, plus 5% GST
  • ID: passport or original Voter ID (not Aadhaar)
  • Money: rupees are accepted at par with the Ngultrum, and UPI works in many towns
  • Your own car: allowed, but it pays ₹4,500/day in Green Tax
  • Typical 6-day road trip for 2: about ₹32,000 for car and SDF together

Bhutan Car Rental for Indians 2026

For most Indians, Bhutan feels close to home yet completely different. You can take an overnight train to NJP, cross the border on foot at Jaigaon, and be in Thimphu by evening, with no visa and no currency exchange.

But the details trip people up: Which ID? Can my Siliguri taxi come along? Will Google Pay work? This guide answers all of it, in rupees, for Indian travellers.

Getting to Your Car: Routes from Indian Cities

Most Indian travellers pick up their Bhutanese car in one of two places: Phuentsholing (by road) or Paro (by air).

Starting from

Best way to the border or Paro

Where your Bhutan car starts

Bagdogra Airport (IXB)

Taxi, about 165 km, 4–5 hrs, to Jaigaon

Phuentsholing

NJP / Siliguri

Taxi or bus, about 160 km, 4–5 hrs

Phuentsholing

Kolkata

Overnight train to NJP or Hasimara, or a flight to Bagdogra; also flights to Paro

Phuentsholing or Paro

Delhi, Mumbai

Fly to Bagdogra, then taxi; or fly direct to Paro

Phuentsholing or Paro

Guwahati

Road via Samdrup Jongkhar or Gelephu for eastern Bhutan, or a flight to Paro

Samdrup Jongkhar, Gelephu or Paro

Alipurduar / Hasimara

Short drive to Jaigaon, about 1–1.5 hrs from Hasimara

Phuentsholing

Road or air?

  • By road via Jaigaon: the cheapest option, with a scenic first day up to Thimphu. Most road trips overnight in Phuentsholing so the entry permit can be done in the morning.
  • By air to Paro: fastest, but flights are limited and often cost ₹15,000–₹20,000 one way. You start sightseeing on day 1.

Route details and fares: Bagdogra to Bhutan taxi, Siliguri to Bhutan taxi, Jaigaon to Thimphu taxi and Paro to Thimphu taxi.

What Indians Pay: Car + SDF by Trip Length

These are the two costs every Indian road trip has: the car inside Bhutan and the SDF. Figures are for 2 adults, with 5% GST on the car included.

Travelling with kids? Children aged 6–12 pay half SDF (₹600/night), and under-6s pay nothing. The car costs the same, so families get more value per seat.

Not included above: the Indian taxi to and from the border (about ₹3,500–₹4,500 each way from Bagdogra in a sedan), hotels, food, monument entry fees, and a guide if your itinerary needs one.

Is Bhutan cheaper than India?

For transport, roughly similar: a Bhutanese car with driver costs about what you'd pay for a hill-station taxi in Sikkim or Himachal. The SDF is the main extra cost, at ₹1,200 per adult per night. Hotels and food are comparable to Indian hill stations.

Rates for every vehicle are in our full Bhutan car rental price guide.

Money, UPI and Phones

Rupees

The Bhutanese Ngultrum is pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee, and rupees are accepted almost everywhere tourists go. Carry notes of ₹100 and below for most of your cash. Indian guidance allows up to ₹25,000 in ₹500 notes; anything above that should be in ₹100 or smaller.

UPI

BHIM, PhonePe and Google Pay work at many shops, cafés and hotels in the main towns, and the money is debited in rupees from your Indian account. Network issues happen in the hills, so keep cash as a backup. Ask your car operator whether they accept UPI for the balance payment.

Phone and internet

Your Indian SIM may not work reliably once you're past the border. The easy fix is a local tourist SIM from B-Mobile or TashiCell, available at the border towns, Paro airport and Thimphu for under ₹500. Signal is good in towns and patchy on mountain roads, so download offline maps before you leave Thimphu.

Tip: Save your driver's local number on day 1. Hotel Wi-Fi is fine in towns, but your driver is the one person you'll need to reach on the road.

Indian Taxi or Bhutanese Car? Where to Switch

It's tempting to keep the Siliguri taxi that picked you up. Here's why almost every experienced traveller switches at the border:

Indian taxi beyond Phuentsholing

Bhutan-registered car from Phuentsholing

Green Tax

₹4,500 per day

None

Permits

Needs its own vehicle permit and check-post registration

Already licensed

Driver's local knowledge

Often limited

Knows routes, check posts and permit offices

Driver's food and stay in Bhutan

Usually extra

Usually included

Cost for 6 days (car only)

₹27,000 Green Tax plus taxi hire

About ₹20,160 in total for a sedan

The simple plan: Book one operator for both legs. An Indian taxi brings you from Bagdogra or NJP to Jaigaon, and a Bhutanese car and driver meet you at Phuentsholing, with one contact person and one quote. Driving your own car instead? See the full numbers in our self-drive guide.

Sample Car Plans for Indian Travellers

All three start and end at Phuentsholing, the most common route for Indians coming by road. Plan your Thimphu day on a weekday so the route permit can be processed.

Tips Just for Indian Travellers

  • Book early for Indian holidays. Puja, Diwali, Christmas and summer school holidays bring the biggest wave of Indian visitors, and SUVs and Hiaces sell out first. Book 3–4 weeks ahead.
  • Hindi works almost everywhere. Most drivers and hotel staff working with tourists speak Hindi and English.
  • Food is easy. Vegetarian food is widely available, and many Thimphu and Phuentsholing restaurants serve North Indian dishes. Try ema datshi (chilli and cheese), but ask for it mild.
  • Dress for dzongs. Long sleeves and trousers or long skirts are expected inside dzongs and temples. No caps or shorts.
  • No smoking in public. Bhutan has strict tobacco rules. Don't smoke in public places or in your rental car.
  • Respect the quiet roads. Honking is frowned upon, and speed limits are low. Your driver will follow the rules even if you're in a hurry, and that's a good thing.
  • Carry your ID at all times. Police check posts between districts check permits, and your driver will need your documents ready.
